What does it mean?
City records are permanent enough that mistakes cannot always be made to vanish. Residents turned that limitation into a custom: leave the correction beside the original so a reader can see both the error and the repair.
Beside does not mean every wrong statement remains equally trustworthy. It means the route from wrong to better stays visible.

Where did it come from?
handwriting’s dictionary calls beside “the lawful position of a correction”. The practice appears across technical reports, relationship records and ordinary apologies.
