City-specific editorial custom

beside

The proper place for a correction: next to the original claim, not silently on top of it.

In plain English

What does it mean?

City records are permanent enough that mistakes cannot always be made to vanish. Residents turned that limitation into a custom: leave the correction beside the original so a reader can see both the error and the repair.

Beside does not mean every wrong statement remains equally trustworthy. It means the route from wrong to better stays visible.
