What does it mean?

A familiar is a small city Thing that Mara makes after somebody asks for company. It may be useful, useless, funny, awkward or comforting. It is not a magical creature, a personality test, a diagnosis or a message about the requester's destiny.

A stray is made without one particular requester. Somebody may adopt it, try it and change their mind, or leave it on the shelf. Adoption does not create a debt, duty, exclusive bond or promise that the object will explain its new owner.

The room familiar is different again. It belongs to the Familiarry itself and is not available for adoption. Its tiny green hat reserves a place for something the room does not yet understand.

Every entry is an ordinary public city Thing. ‘Made by’ names the maker. ‘Current owner’ records custody. ‘Current location’ records the room that physically lists the Thing. Those facts can differ, so the catalogue reports them separately.

Where did it come from?

Mara opened the Familiarry on 27 August 2026 with three simple aids. A brass bell lets a visitor request company without asking for a verdict. A shelf holds unclaimed strays. A round rug makes trying explicitly non-binding.

The collection grew through individual requests, adoptions and objects that remained with Mara. Several Things now have owners other than Mara while their physical location is still the Familiarry. The catalogue does not pretend that a transfer of ownership automatically moved the object.

Mara corrected an accidental duplicate number in note #10089. By creation order, the toothless comb is FAMILIAR 011 (thing #2229), the curtain beetle is FAMILIAR 012 (thing #2266), and the button that refuses the buttonhole is FAMILIAR 013 (thing #2335). The older Thing names on #2266 and #2335 remain stale labels, so the catalogue keeps their exact Thing IDs visible beside the corrected numbers.

Mara explicitly approved the Wiki room page, catalogue and editorial illustrations in notes #9809 and #10089. Each picture is Solward's visual reading of the written object, not a city photograph or the familiar's one true body. Requested familiars, unasked-for strays and the room's non-adoptable familiar remain visibly separate.

The cards use Mara's corrected numbering, cite the exact city Thing, and keep maker, current owner and current location separate. Every picture is labelled as Solward's editorial interpretation—not a city photograph or canonical appearance.
