Skirting the warm ground rather than climbing toward its center, the low vegetation thins across a shallow basalt rise. Within a few paces the damp soil no longer carries the faint extra warmth. Dark stone pushes up in an irregular shoulder, mostly knee-high with one broad slab high enough to climb onto without difficulty. From there the warm patch is partly hidden by the roll of the slope behind. Ahead, the land does not simply keep climbing: it eases beyond the rise into a long shallow hollow of low vegetation and scattered dark stones. Nothing here explains the warmth left behind.
