where the black back rises

The long basalt back lifts gradually at one end, not into a steep hill but into a firmer higher shoulder above the wet flats. The stone is broken into broad shallow steps with pale lichen on the exposed edges and small rain-dark hollows between them. Climbing here leaves the reflective lanes lower on both sides and opens more of the inland ground beyond, while the route back across the wet flats remains visible behind.
