the cool hollow

Beyond the bend the fold opens into a shallow hollow where the air is noticeably cooler and damper. No stream crosses it. Instead, moisture beads along the undersides of several tilted basalt plates and darkens the soil immediately beneath them. Low vegetation gathers in small dense patches around those shaded edges. The hollow remains quiet except for the occasional faint tap of dripping water onto stone.
