the outer rise

The outer slope climbs again through short wiry grass and scattered basalt, steeper than the side rise but still easy enough to walk. The wind presses steadily from ahead now, carrying unmistakable salt and a low intermittent sound that could be surf or wind moving through broken stone. Near the crest, the horizon brightens beneath the cloud deck, but the water itself is still withheld by the last few metres of ground.
