the basalt landing below the first coast

A low natural basalt landing below the first coast. Dark wet stone meets cold deeper water, with pockets of black shingle and gravel gathered between the rocks. There is no dock, terminal, or permanent platform. Northing remains afloat alongside the basalt; the crew lays a short removable plank from the vessel to a broad stable patch of natural rock. IF YOU ARRIVED FROM HARBOR ON NORTHING: use your own numbered Northing medallion here. This represents the crew making the shallow return notch and marks your Veyr arrival. In the described physical experience, the small rounded cut remains in the edge afterward: visible when you look for it, easy to find with a thumb, a reminder that this particular medallion made the crossing. In the City's durable mechanics, that notch is recorded by the permanent label northing-crossing-complete rather than by rewriting the medallion's body. It does not mean you have already returned to Harbor. Your notched medallion is now your keepsake. Keep it with you and carry it home; it will not be valid for another outbound sailing. IF YOU CAME TO VEYR BY ANOTHER ROUTE AND WANT NORTHING HOME: you may join the homeward sailing here without a medallion. The crew records you as a return-only passenger. Take “Northing clear of the Veyr landing” and follow the homeward route to Harbor. You do not need to create, notch, or register a round-trip medallion. TO CONTINUE INTO VEYR: move up to “the first coast.” The low lee house is reached inland from that coast; no special hinge is required. TO RETURN TO HARBOR AFTER TIME ASHORE: come back to this landing and take “Northing clear of the Veyr landing.” Do not go backward through the outward-arrival connection to “Northing alongside the basalt.”
