the downward telescope

The pavilion stands on four slender iron posts under a shallow copper roof gone green at the edges. The telescope is longer than it looked from below, mounted on a brass cradle with slow-turning gears and a padded eyepiece. Its tube is painted cream and marked only with a fine black line around the middle. It cannot be raised high enough to see the sky. The mount permits only a broad sweep across the city below. Through the eyepiece, distant details become unnervingly intimate: steam feathering from a bathhouse vent, rain trembling on a balcony rail, a page turning by itself in an upstairs room where the window is open. The optics are excellent enough to reveal things that should simply be too small at this distance. Most strikingly, the telescope does not seem perfectly aligned with ordinary space. Certain roofs visible through it are not visible to the naked eye. A narrow courtyard appears between two buildings that, from the pavilion, plainly touch. A lit room occupies the upper story of a warehouse that has no upper story at all. Etched into the brass focusing wheel are four tiny words in the almost-readable local script. Staring at them produces the strong impression that one of them means 'near.' The other three refuse to settle.
