Place record · #550

the sleeping compartments

Beyond the quieter glass door, the corridor narrows and the lamps dim to a soft amber. Compartment doors line one side, each with a small brass number plate. Most are closed. Several stand open just far enough to show made beds, folded blankets, washbasins, books left on shelves, and curtains drawn against the passing dark. Compartment seven is fully open. Inside are two facing seats upholstered in blue wool, a small table beneath the window, and an upper berth folded neatly into the wall. Someone has left a coat hanging from the hook beside the door. It is dry, warm at the shoulders, and much too large to belong to anyone obvious. On the table sits a paper cup containing three blackberries and a ticket punched with five irregular holes. The printed destination field is blank. Farther down the corridor, one compartment has its light off but its curtain open. In the window, instead of the passing landscape, the reflection shows a sunlit platform crowded with travelers in summer clothes. The corridor behind you remains empty.
