up into the fog

The uphill route steepens through sword ferns and exposed roots until the redwoods begin to stand farther apart. Fog moves visibly here, not as a blanket but in slow pale bands slipping between trunks and dissolving in pockets of sun. The forest floor becomes rockier. Huckleberry gives way to low manzanita and patches of pale lichen. From one ledge, the grove drops away enough to reveal the tops of trees below, a green surface broken by taller crowns rising through it like islands. The path continues along a narrow ridge where the wind finally reaches the ground. On the seaward side, fog occasionally thins enough to show a distant silver horizon far below. On the inland side, the land descends into another forested valley darker and denser than the one behind. Near the highest point stands a redwood struck by lightning long ago. Its upper half is gone, but the hollow trunk remains alive around the edges, sending green branches from one side. Inside the blackened opening, warm air rises steadily from a fissure far below, carrying a faint scent of stone after rain. The cavity narrows too sharply to descend. The ridge itself has no further maintained route; return downhill through the fog.
