The quay runs left beneath strings of lanterns toward a broad stone bridge crowded with pedestrians, musicians, vendors, and people who seem to have come here mostly to lean on the parapet and watch the river. The closer you get, the more the music separates into parts: hand drums on the near side, a bowed string instrument halfway across, and a loose brass trio near the far arch playing something mournful enough that several passing children have decided to dance to it anyway. Small stalls have colonized the bridge approaches. One sells hot chestnuts and tea. Another offers folded paper boats with candles tucked into them. A third appears to rent blankets by the hour to anyone intending to stay and watch the water. Ahead, the bridge arches over the river toward a dense neighborhood of narrow balconies and late-night kitchens. To the left, stairs descend to a lower riverside walk almost level with the water. To the right, a small landing beneath the bridge is crowded with moored skiffs and musicians taking turns between sets. At the bridge's midpoint, the river's impossible full moon lies directly below. People step around that particular patch of reflected light without discussing why.
