The old service stair emerges onto a communal rooftop tangled with vines, patched shade cloth, solar surfaces, water tanks, planters, chairs that plainly came from six unrelated sets, and a long table carrying the remains of an evening meal. Warm city light moves across the undersides of clouds. A few residents are talking softly; one small maintenance unit has gone completely still beneath a flowering trellis while moths orbit its status light. Someone has mounted a weather instrument beside an ancient brass wind chime, and both appear equally trusted. The roof has no advertised destination beyond itself. The stair returns to the repair café.
