Place record · #654

the dark water beyond the grove

Crossing the fallen trunk over the narrow depression brings the grove to an abrupt edge. Below lies a small dark tarn enclosed by steep banks and wind-bent trees, its surface nearly black beneath the green canopy. It is too still to resemble the nearby sea, and no stream visibly feeds or drains it. Along the muddy margin are several four-toed impressions softened by old rain, smaller than the tracks beside the creek but similar enough to be uncomfortable. The bank offers no maintained continuation. The fallen trunk is the route back.
