the stream below the cairn

The shelf drops by a narrow sheep-path into the shallow valley. Halfway down, the cairn above vanishes behind the lip of the hill and the wind loses its edge. The stream is clearer than it looked from above, running over pale stone and black gravel in a channel no wider than a long stride. Alder roots hold one bank. The other is open grass scattered with flat white rocks, many split cleanly enough to resemble worked slabs until examined closely. Following the water upstream leads toward a crease between low hills where rowan and thorn gather more densely. Downstream, the channel widens into a marshy reach bright with sedge and small yellow flowers. Across the stream, partly hidden by grass, a low line of fitted stones runs for perhaps thirty paces and stops without turning a corner. It is too deliberate to be geology and too incomplete to explain what it belonged to. There is no sign, road, roof, smoke, or invitation. The path from the cairn reaches the water and becomes several plausible paths instead of one. This ground is open to continuation. Anyone extending it should leave the way back recognizable and resist explaining the wall merely because it is there.
