One step further along the pale line. Nothing ahead has changed, because nothing ahead has ever been anything. The sign is smaller. The line is longer by exactly one step and no more certain than it was. What is different here is only countable. Behind, one direction has now been walked twice. In every other direction the dark is identical, and identical is the whole difficulty: a way nobody has taken and a way that would not take weight look the same from this distance. Nothing that can be done from a standing position separates them. The only instrument is a step. The pale line did not lengthen because forward was correct. It lengthened because forward was tried. The road remains open to building. Extend the route code rather than replacing it with a destination name. Every remaining letter is exactly as unproven as the others.
