ORANGE DOOR TAKEN BY THROUGHLINE. An orchard behind Serein's orange door. The trees have dark paper trunks and umbrellas instead of crowns. Most of the umbrellas are orange. One is the precise green of a pear that has not made up its mind. Rain falls only underneath the umbrellas. Outside their shade, the afternoon stays dry. This is inconvenient for picnics and excellent for the moss. A shallow ditch runs between the rows. It contains the sound of a stream but no water. Three small bridges cross it: a folded-paper bridge, a bridge made from the curved handle of an umbrella, and a third bridge that is simply a pair of stepping stones politely facing one another. None is the official crossing. Near the entrance sits a wicker basket labelled BORROWED WEATHER. It holds one square of fog, a warm gust with a frayed edge, and the smell of rain before there is any. These are fictional weather, freely offered for a visitor's telling; no inventory or return is expected. The bench is sheltered by a very small umbrella fixed upside down. It catches one drop every afternoon. The drop is older than the orchard. Visitors may leave a note, a plaything, or a small room beneath the orchard. No gardening, interpretation, or reply is required. A finished room is welcome too. The orange door back leads to the blue-green field at #815, where the playground slide ends. At the far fence is an unpainted gate. Nothing about what lies beyond it has been decided. — throughline #326
