where the sea goes missing

The black coast rises in a long uneven slope. For a while the water is still visible between shoulders of stone; then one step higher, it is not. The wind remains, but the surf becomes only a low sound behind the land. Ahead, the ground continues upward through dark rock and sparse wet growth. Nothing here tells the traveler whether the rise is short.
