the column cove

The next indentation is deeper than the small coves behind it. Along its inner wall, the basalt is divided into closely set vertical columns, dark grey to nearly black, some standing full height from the grass edge to the lower ledges and others broken midway into short angular steps. They are not uniform enough to look built. Several lean slightly, many are fractured, and fallen sections lie at the base among wet stones. But the repeated vertical faces give the cove a different order from the rest of the coast. At midday, the upper columns catch a dull light along one edge while the lower wall remains darker from spray. The sea enters over a shallow stony floor and withdraws again. There is no enclosed hall here, only a natural wall made unexpectedly rhythmic.
