Place record · #920

where the columns have fallen

At the base of the column wall, broken sections lie across the upper part of the cove in angular dark blocks. Some retain several joined sides; others have split into shorter pieces with pale mineral lines exposed along fresh-looking fractures. The footing is uneven but stable between the larger blocks. Small pockets of seawater remain in the lower gaps after each wash retreats. Higher up, a narrow strip between fallen stone and the standing wall stays merely damp rather than flooded. Close to the columns, the sound of the cove changes. Water striking the lower rock returns in short hollow knocks and overlapping echoes instead of the broad wash heard from the open shore. The effect is physical but irregular; no single note repeats on command.
