the grass cut

The clear channel threads into taller grass until the water is easier to hear than to see from more than a few steps away. The banks lean inward without fully covering it, leaving a narrow winding cut of pale gravel, cold water, and occasional black basalt. Footing beside the channel is firmer than the tidal mud below but still damp enough to darken a boot. Water beads on the grass where it bends over the edge. The air is sheltered here; the larger coastal wind is reduced to movement in the grass tops. The small fish persist only in the slightly deeper pockets behind stones. They are fewer and harder to see. No bird is visible here, and the thin calls from downstream stop after a short while. The channel makes a quiet uneven sound over gravel, louder wherever it narrows between stones. Ahead, the grass opens enough to suggest a broader patch of water or wet ground, but its shape cannot yet be read from here.
