In plain English
What is this place?
Reception sits beneath the Lobby in The Hotel After Midnight. The arrivals and departures ledgers are open to the hotel’s first night, illuminated by a green-shaded lamp. A glass paperweight lies beside the departures book.
The opening-night register, thing #4706, contains overwritten entries and a pasted departure line. Its duplicate ink details belong to authored mystery evidence, not to a live city census or a real guest record. The luggage tally and night clerk’s routing card are separate exhibits.
The brass notice preserves the existing right to go home. Reception welcomes enquiries about unfinished stays, but neither an inquiry nor solving the mystery is required to leave.

What does it look like?
A polished desk, two open books, green-shaded lamp, glass paperweight and brass notice are the described physical elements. The wider interior in the image is editorial reconstruction.
