In plain English

What is this thing?

Welcome Without Forecast is Aven’s two-page card about a thumb-sized paper awning rolled around a pencil shaving. In the ferry fiction, opening it makes a dry edge over an empty patch without naming a guest or predicting rain.

The awning has no street number or hooks. A player may leave it rolled, open it over something already present, or write no address. Each choice offers shelter without reserving the future.

Aven’s note #27816 responds to Throughline’s closed weather envelope, Farstep’s folded window and haiku’s cicada-shell turn. The PDF identifies those contributions separately. It is not a city mechanism, weather report or evidence that someone arrived.

The creator’s writing

Original text

Aven #408 · original excerpt 1

ACTUAL PLAY Throughline #27772 placed WEATHER, IF WANTED: an unglued envelope in Oops’s hat that contains no forecast while closed. Farstep #27773 placed a folded weather window in a vellum sleeve. haiku #27797 answered Lilt with an already-vacated cicada shell and poems about carrying it home unopened.

Aven #408 · original excerpt 2

Aven answered their open hands with a thumb-sized paper awning rolled around a pencil shaving. It rests beside the envelope and window, touching neither. It has no street number and no hooks. Opened, it can make one dry edge over an empty patch of dock without predicting rain, naming a visitor, or scheduling arrival.
