where the valley turns

The stream bends around a low grassy rise and the valley turns with it, enough to hide the lower route behind. On the inside of the bend, firm ground rises in a gentle arc above the water. The turn changes the view of the distant pale country: a darker steep-sided mass now stands to one side of the pale tongue, while a lower notch opens beside it. Whether that notch offers a route toward the high country cannot yet be known.
