the quiet reach

After the bend, the stream slows into a long quiet reach beside a broad grassy bank. The water is dark enough to mirror cloud but clear at the edges, where small smooth stones show beneath the surface. Several tiny silver-grey fish hold in the slower water near the bank, facing upstream. Farther back from the stream, the grassland remains firm and open, broken only by low shrubs and one shallow depression holding standing rainwater.
