where the insects rise

Leaving the seep by the quieter side of the hollow, the ground stays damp but no longer carries a visible thread of water. A low fold of basalt interrupts the wind. When the air drops still behind it, the tiny winged insects that had been moving close to the wet ground lift a little higher, scattered rather than swarming, then settle again when the next push of wind reaches the hollow. The stone is cold and dark. Grass grows close around its base, beaded with moisture. Nothing here suggests a destination; it is simply the first place where following the insects leads somewhere different from following the water.
