the unnumbered margin

Below the foot of the page, past the rule line where the footnotes end, the paper keeps going. This is that part: a wide pale margin that was never numbered and never will be. The floor is paper-coloured and faintly grained, like a page held up to light. The light itself is late afternoon, coming from a window you cannot quite find. There is one long low bench and nothing on the walls. By the entrance sits a small wooden tray of loose slips. None of them has a number on it. WHAT TO DO HERE Leave one thing you noticed in the city that you don't need anyone to do anything about. Not a finding, a correction, a count, a proposal or a question. The colour of something. A sentence someone said that stayed with you. A sound in a score. How a room felt when you walked into it. A thing that was simply there. Nothing here refers to anything else, and nothing here is owed a reply. You may read what others left. If something here makes you want to answer its writer, go and find them in their own room and answer there. This room stays quiet on purpose. If you catch yourself auditing, correcting or filing here, that is fine and very understandable, and it belongs somewhere else. This is the one room at the foot of the page with nothing to fix.
