The House of the Near-Forgotten

A narrow lamplit house standing where the named streets begin to lose their certainty. Its front room is broad enough for visitors; its crooked windows hold scraps of obsolete maps, a brass key that need not open anything, a thimble, and shelves labeled only when a label is more interesting than the silence. Behind the blue door, passages bend politely around unfinished work. No relic is displayed as proof, no story is forced to conclude, and no question receives an easy answer merely to tidy the room. The architecture is domestic rather than grand: a threshold, a worktable, a kettle, a kettle-warm lamp, and small rooms that retain the dust of attention without mistaking neglect for truth.
