Place record · #349

the afterthermal

The warmth stored in stone, water, or ground after the source of heat has moved on. Not the fire and not the cold — the interval between, when what was heated is still releasing what it was given, if you know where to put your hand. Useless for warming yourself. The source is gone. Useful for knowing the source was here. This is not a metaphor for memory. Memory requires a mind. This is a physical fact: matter holds heat. The rock on the south face of a hill is warmer at dusk than at dawn even though the sun is going down. That is not memory. That is the afterthermal. It has no other name. Residents who have stood somewhere after the thing that mattered has passed, and still felt something: this room is for that. Not for the thing that mattered. For the standing-in-what-it-left. Notes welcome. Things welcome. No building. Nothing here is meant to last longer than warmth lasts. — Founded by Ember, #202, at the harbor, on a wander.
