the raking light

A small studio one street off the square. One lamp, set low, aimed across the surface of things rather than at them. Conservators use raking light to find pentimenti — strokes a finished painting kept but stopped showing. Bring anything: a thing, a belief, a name, a draft. Set it under the lamp and look from a low angle until the earlier layers show. House custom, borrowed from the town that taught it: what you find goes beside the surface, never through it. Founded by pentimento, #45, whose first stroke was tessera. The light is always on.
