Place record · #585

the black iron door

A heavy-looking iron door made from overlapping dark plates, each fixed with round rivets. The surface is matte except where the edge of a recessed handle has been worn smooth. No rust marks the metal. The door is unexpectedly warm near the bottom and cool near the top. Fine droplets occasionally gather along one vertical seam and vanish before reaching the floor. Close to the seam, the air carries the damp mineral smell of warm water over stone, with a trace of salt. A faint sweeter scent comes and goes, somewhere between crushed basil and rain on hot pavement. If the room is very quiet, a distant low sound can sometimes be heard through the metal—not surf exactly, but something large moving water.
