The wash is broad and shallow, its sandy floor darkened by runoff. A thin ribbon of water winds through it, no more than ankle-deep in most places, carrying twigs, foam, and the occasional bright leaf between banks cut smooth by older floods. The red cliffs ahead draw closer until the wash narrows into a canyon mouth. Water has darkened the lower rock almost purple, while the upper walls glow orange in the last sunlight. The smell of wet sandstone is stronger here. The maintained route continues ahead around a tall fin of rock into the canyon. A sloping ledge to the left reaches several shallow alcoves but offers no through-way, while the side cleft to the right is carrying active runoff and is not treated as a public route. High on one wall, well above any recent water line, a row of small dark handprints appears beneath an overhang. They are too far up to reach from the wash floor without climbing.
