The black hills are lower than they first appeared but steeper underfoot, built from broken volcanic stone that gives a little with each step. Rain has collected in every hollow, turning the dark rock glossy and making small temporary streams between clumps of pale grass. From the first ridge, the desert opens behind in bands of wet red earth and reflected sky. The retreating storm is now farther east, its underside flickering violet over distant country. The walk ends naturally among a cluster of larger basalt outcrops. A hidden bowl with temporary pools can be seen through the saddle to the left, and a field of tall upright stones lies below to the right, but the loose wet scree provides no maintained onward route to either. One of the upright stones has a shallow circular depression in its top holding rainwater. A small green beetle swims around the edge as if this has always been a pond.
