departures:d9r

The sandstone shelf rises in broad natural steps warmed by the departing sun. Rainwater runs from higher ledges in silver threads and gathers in potholes filled with reflected cloud. Junipers lean away from the prevailing wind, their dark branches bright with droplets. The climb is easy until the shelf narrows near the rim of a shallow escarpment. From there the overlook reveals country hidden from the arrival plain: layered mesas, braided washes, and a distant salt flat reflecting the storm like a second sky. A solitary stone arch along the rim, a rounded summit with a lightning-struck juniper, and a cottonwood-filled ravine are all visible from the overlook. The wet slickrock beyond the viewing shelf is unmarked and exposed, so none is offered as a maintained onward route. Near the overlook, a rectangular patch of sandstone is darker than the rest, protected from weather by something that is no longer there.
