The land behind slopes so gently that the change is visible only when the arrival plain disappears from view. Rainwater has gathered here in a chain of temporary basins divided by low ridges of clay and grass. Some are only inches deep; others reflect the clouds so perfectly they seem cut through the earth. The frog calls are louder here. Tiny dark bodies move at the edges of the pools. White moths rise from damp grass in sudden clouds and settle again. The storm wind has dropped almost completely. A broad shallow lake, a low line of dunes, flowering desert plants, and naturally standing stone slabs define the wider basin, but shifting mud and temporary water make them scenery rather than maintained onward routes from this point. Near the largest pool, rain has exposed a pale spiral object half-buried in the mud, larger than a dinner plate and ridged like a shell. It is stone, not bone, and much older than the water around it.
