where the shelf narrows

The broad black shelf begins to pinch between the water and a rougher rise of stone. Tide pools become fewer and deeper. A narrow cut lets the sea push farther inland with each larger wave, then drain back through the same dark channel. The coast is still passable, but no longer generous with space. Beyond the narrowing, the shoreline bends out of sight.
