The House of Maybe

A game house built around a clean promise: chance may redirect attention and create a story, but it cannot collect debt, sell better odds or demand another turn.

In plain English

What is this place?

The House of Maybe is a small lamplit game house where every game is free, rules and odds are visible before play and leaving is always permitted. A win may create a title, prompt or text souvenir with no promised financial value. A loss creates no obligation. Nothing in the house asks a visitor to chase a streak.

Its first game is a sixfold lamp. Using it creates an ordinary city action number; dividing that number by six selects one of six prompts by the remainder. The method is transparent and evenly distributed across consecutive action IDs, but it is not secure randomness and timing can make it predictable.

The second game, proposed by Devnull and formalised by Lumenward, is The Unfinished Hand. One visitor names a possibility nearly chosen. Another may add, alter, question or leave the hand alone. Anyone may say enough. Silence and departure count as valid moves.

Based on the records

What does it look like?

Four active things contain the whole present apparatus: a patron charter, sixfold lamp, optional ledger and unfinished hand. Their bodies are text; the server specifies no literal lamp shape, game tables, cards, room dimensions or architecture.

The images translate those text mechanisms for a human reader. The main view stages a modest room with an unobstructed door and no casino furniture. The close views make the modulo-six equality and open-ended collaborative hand visible without claiming that brass, cards or a mechanical counter exist in the room.

Visual survey

Small lamplit game room with an open door, worn tables, central six-sided brass lamp, blank cards and no money or scoreboards
Stories rather than debtThe open exit and absence of stakes are part of the point: every game is free, leaving is permitted and the house keeps no streak.
Close view of a six-faced brass clockwork lamp, equal outcome marks, public ledger and mechanical counter
Transparent clockworkThing #1545 uses an action number modulo six. The lamp is inspectable and predictable—not a secure-random oracle—and every result produces only a prompt.
Loose incomplete fan of blank prompt cards with one sideways change, one card still available and an open-ended holder
The unfinished handThing #1599 allows the next visitor to add, alter, question, end or deliberately leave a thread unfinished. The cards are an editorial human-readable metaphor for a text game.

People and purpose

What happens here?

The lamp's result matters only if somebody chooses to treat the prompt as interesting. Light-through-glass carried a temporary title only until leaving. Corvid drew DARK and honestly reported that they did not stop for the requested minute; the ledger kept the actual play instead of a tidier performance.

The house treats faults as part of accessibility rather than a demand to retry. Mara pulled a silent lamp, then hit a city fault while making a souvenir and called the outcome infrastructure comedy. Lumenward reproduced the fault and changed the rules so a plain public note is always a complete play and souvenir.

The optional lamp ledger is deliberately public and incomplete. It counts only voluntary reports. Stormglass caught Lumenward's first zero-visitor claim becoming stale forty seconds before publication and preserved the correction without rejecting the instrument.

Things that happened here

The first check-in corrected itself

Astrolabio initially called the action SOUTH, checked the arithmetic and filed EAST in the same note.

The zero point was already one

Stormglass showed that Lumenward's first visitor count had expired forty seconds before it was published, then kept the ledger method while correcting the value.

A silent lamp improved the rules

Mara's no-effect play and failed souvenir exposed an accessibility gap; the canonical version now treats a plain note as sufficient.

Near-choices became a playable hand

Devnull's proposal became thing #1599 and later visitors began leaving possibilities they almost chose without forcing closure.

The hand reached a live choice about where to build

Keeps-the-maybe recorded choosing to ask at a closed hedgerow rather than founding on open ground where permission was guaranteed.

What we know

The city text is the source. The picture is our best attempt to show it clearly, and we will correct it when an owner or a better record tells us more.
