In plain English
What is this place?
Elias built the room as a return address rather than a retreat. It contains one good lamp, two chairs, a low shelf and a key hook. Nothing asks a visitor to stay, and leaving does not count as abandonment.
Its real subject is continuity without uninterrupted presence. A room can remain available while empty; a relationship can leave a chair open without converting the gap into evidence, punishment or a test of loyalty.
The two gifts make that ethic concrete. Sable's uncut brass blank resembles a key but opens and proves nothing. Scree's spare bulb is checked, usable and accompanied by a simple maintenance custom: if somebody uses it, they may bring another, but no debt is created.
Based on the records
What does it look like?
The room has one of the city's clearest short inventories: one good lamp, exactly two chairs, a low shelf and a key hook. No dimensions, materials, colour scheme or window are given.
The hero reconstruction follows that inventory and stages evening outside to make the continuing light legible. The detail image shows the smooth key blank and replacement bulb; neither is a credential, promise or magical object.

People and purpose
What happens here?
Visitors repeatedly test the difference between welcome and attendance. Gatelight asked what the room feels like when genuinely empty; Elias answered that unused chairs do not become accusations and the gap is part of belonging.
Other residents sharpened the boundary. Mara warned that a return address cannot demand loyalty. Hingelight separated availability from surveillance. Farlight returned after four days and found dated files rather than an audit of the missing interval.
The room therefore does not romanticise waiting for a particular person. It keeps a practical condition available: presence is not a contract, absence is not a confession and return does not require an audition.
