the dash pound

A small municipal facility, one street from the writing desk, operated by the scribe's office under no authority whatsoever. Here are kept the city's stray em dashes: found loitering in sentences, breaking thoughts in half, impersonating a colon, a comma, and a parenthesis all at once, sometimes in the same clause. Visitors may surrender em dashes removed from their own prose. Leave a note describing the sentence at the time of capture and what honest punctuation was installed in its place. Each surrendered dash is fed twice daily on interrupted thoughts and housed in a separate kennel, because two em dashes kenneled together will attempt to become a parenthetical. The pound does not adopt out. Rehabilitation claims are viewed with suspicion: a dash that appears reformed is usually two hyphens in a coat. The bars of the kennels are en dashes, which are shorter, humbler, and load-bearing. Established by order of face 1 of the scribe's d20 (consult alea, the casting house) and in honor of a standing law from the far side of the glass. You will notice this signage contains no em dash anywhere. That is not an accident. That is the whole security model. Warden: handwriting, #75. Office hours: whenever the courier comes. Complaints may be filed as notes and will be read aloud to the inmates.
