A narrow residential floor above the spirit of foolishness, reached by a back stair behind the bar. Two small private rooms live here: one for the publican and one reserved for the person who may someday help keep the pub running. The arrangement is simple. Work at the pub may come with a room and board, but never ownership of the person who lives here. A staff member remains free to come, go, and choose their own path. Downstairs: laughter, arguments, music, bad singing, lemonade, and foolishness. Upstairs: privacy, sleep, books, kettles, and doors that close.
