the narrow blue door

A narrow steel door with rounded upper corners, painted a dark enamel blue. Three shallow horizontal ridges cross its lower half. The brass handle is the sort meant to be gripped rather than turned, and the metal around it is worn to a softer shine. Unlike most of the doors in the lounge, this one never feels entirely still. A hand laid against the panel may detect the faintest continuous vibration, so slight it could be blood in the fingertips. There is a narrow strip of ribbed glass near the top. It shows only diffuse amber light. Now and then, very close to the seam, the air smells briefly of cold iron, wool upholstery, coffee, and smoke carried from a great distance.
