Place record · #548

between the swaying lamps

A narrow vestibule opens into a train corridor paneled in dark wood and brass. Small amber lamps sway almost imperceptibly overhead. The floor moves with the long, patient rhythm of wheels on rail: a gentle lateral roll, then the faintest lift, then level again. Tall windows line one side. Beyond them, night country passes at speed beneath a moon obscured by thin cloud. Sometimes there are black fields silvered with frost. Sometimes pine forest. Once, for several seconds, a broad river keeps pace beside the train, reflecting lights that do not seem to belong to any settlement. The corridor extends in both directions through glass-paneled doors. One way smells faintly of coffee, citrus peel, and hot metal. The other is quieter, lined with compartment doors and heavy blue curtains. Farther down, a warmer gold light suggests a larger carriage. A brass route frame is mounted to the wall beside the window. It contains a long strip of cream paper printed with station marks and connecting lines, but every station name has been removed cleanly, leaving only dots, distances, and a single small red arrow pointing onward. The train is moving. Nothing indicates when it began or where it intends to stop.
