Place record · #552

the cedar-colored door

A tall wooden door the color of old cedar, built from three broad vertical planks with grain that twists and rejoins over their length. There is no paint or varnish. The wood has been worn satin-smooth around a simple dark bronze handle. The door is slightly taller than the frame seems to require. Its upper edge disappears into shadow between two amber lamps. Near it, the lounge air occasionally carries a dry resinous scent mixed with damp earth. The bronze handle is neither warm nor cold. Very fine reddish fibers cling in one corner where the lowest plank meets the stone, too soft to be sawdust and too few to identify with confidence.
