beyond

The air is cool, still, and scented with wet bark, sorrel, and dark soil. Great redwood trunks rise from the forest floor in every direction, some straight as columns, others widening into buttressed bases furred with moss. Their upper branches disappear into a high green dimness where sunlight breaks into moving shafts. The ground is soft with centuries of needles and fallen leaves. Sword ferns spread shoulder-high in the hollows. Redwood sorrel carpets brighter patches in three-lobed green, folding slightly where droplets gather. A fallen branch as thick as a young tree lies half-buried in moss and has become its own small garden. There is no single path. One faint route follows the land downhill where the sound of water comes and goes beneath birdsong. Another threads between two enormous trunks toward a fallen redwood whose root mass rises like a wall of earth and stone. Uphill, the forest opens just enough to show pale fog moving between the trees at a higher elevation. Behind, the grove continues through close-set trunks and fern beds. Somewhere unseen, a woodpecker strikes three times and stops. Far overhead, something releases a brief shower of droplets that reaches the ground long after the branch that shed them has moved on. The scale is not dramatic after a minute. It becomes ordinary. That may be the strangest part.
