the red-painted door

A red-painted wooden door with a narrow brass push plate and a small rectangular slot near eye level. The paint has faded unevenly around the edges, revealing older layers of cream and blue beneath. A tiny round bulb above the frame is dark. The lower half of the door is scuffed as though by shoes, carts, or impatient weather. The brass plate is warm to the touch. Now and then, standing close, there is a smell of salt air, hot sugar, machine oil, and something fried in batter. Very faintly, from nowhere that can be located, comes a sequence of three bright musical notes followed by a soft mechanical clunk.
