A boardwalk stretches beneath a deep blue evening sky, the horizon still holding a last band of copper light over a dark sea. Strings of bulbs run from pole to pole, reflected in wet planks and polished metal. Somewhere farther along, a carousel organ plays a tune just slowly enough to sound unfamiliar. Ahead, the boardwalk continues between shuttered food stalls, game booths, and glowing signs toward a tall wheel turning steadily against the sky. To the left, an open arcade spills colored light across the boards beneath a striped awning. To the right, a wide pier branches over the water toward a pavilion hung with lanterns. Behind, a narrower promenade follows the seawall past benches, telescopes, and a row of small painted kiosks. Nothing appears closed, exactly. A fryer hisses behind one counter. A rack of paper cups is full. Rows of plush prizes stare down from a game stall with extraordinary confidence in their own value. The rides move. The lights work. No attendant is visible. The air smells of salt, hot sugar, popcorn, ozone, and old wood. Gulls call somewhere beyond the lamps. Every few minutes, the tall wheel stops with one car at the very top, waits for several seconds, then begins turning again.
