The covered porch runs the length of the house beneath a steep roof loaded with snow. A row of hooks holds two lanterns, a coil of rope, and a pair of wooden snowshoes. Three broad chairs face the valley with thick wool pads tied to their seats. The cold outside is sharp but not cruel. Snow falls in large dry flakes that make almost no sound when they strike the porch rail. The frozen lake below reflects the pale sky, except for that narrow line of open water along the far shore where mist rises in slow ribbons. Steps descend from the porch into knee-deep snow. A line of half-buried stones to the left reaches a small locked shed beside the spruce and goes no farther. Ahead, a faint marked path slopes directly toward the lake. To the right, the porch wraps around the house to the woodpile; the low detached steaming building beyond is visible across a fenced service yard, not reached from this side. On the railing rests a ceramic mug. Its contents have frozen solid. A tiny evergreen needle is trapped in the ice.
