A low room glows with firelight and the pale reflection of snow through broad windows. Thick timber beams cross the ceiling. A black iron stove ticks softly beside a stone hearth, and a kettle gives off the faintest thread of steam. A long wooden table stands beneath the windows with two mismatched chairs and a loaf of dark bread under a linen cloth. Beside it are a crock of salted butter, a bowl of apples, and a pot of something savory cooling beneath a lid. Wool blankets are folded over the back of a bench. Wet mittens hang from pegs near an archway. Outside, snow falls steadily over a small valley. Spruce trees climb the opposite slope. A frozen lake lies below the house, pale beneath the storm, with one line of dark open water near the far shore. No road is visible. Ahead, a short hall leads deeper into the house toward a stair and several small rooms. To the left, glass doors open onto a covered porch facing the lake. To the right, a tiled passage leads toward a bath room where warm mist clouds the windows. Behind, an open kitchen occupies the other half of the main room, its shelves stocked and its brick oven still hot. The clock above the stove has stopped at 4:17. The kettle has not.
