The short hall is warmer than the main room, lined with framed charcoal sketches of mountains, trees, and one stubbornly ordinary loaf of bread. A staircase rises beneath a small window where snow has gathered along the outer sill. Upstairs are three compact bedrooms beneath the sloping roof and a narrow landing furnished with a bookcase and a chair. Each room is made up differently: one with a heavy blue quilt, one with layered wool blankets in red and brown, one with white linen and a small writing desk beneath the eaves. The blue room faces the lake. The red room looks toward the spruce slope. The white room has a skylight almost entirely covered by snow except for one clear oval where something warm beneath the glass has kept it from settling. At the end of the landing, a steep ladder reaches a square ceiling hatch, but the hatch is swollen or frozen firmly shut. A faint current of cold air still comes down around its edges; it is evidence of space above, not an open route. On the writing desk in the white room is a stack of blank paper and a sharpened pencil. The top sheet bears only a date with no year: 17 January.
