The kitchen occupies the back half of the main room beneath lower beams darkened by years of smoke. Open shelves hold crockery, jars of grain, dried mushrooms, onions, tea tins, salt, sugar, and more spices than the rest of the house seems ambitious enough to require. The brick oven is still hot. A round loaf cools on a wooden board beside it. Copper pots hang above a deep stone sink, and a heavy kettle simmers on the iron range. Nothing is actively cooking, but several things look recently finished: a pot of root-vegetable stew, roasted apples glazed with something dark, a tray of small seed rolls. A narrow pantry to the left descends three steps but remains part of the kitchen. Ahead, a back window looks directly into the falling snow and the spruce woods beyond. To the right, a short utility passage ends at the covered woodpile; beyond a fence, the detached steaming building can be seen through the snowfall but is not connected by a second public route. A handwritten card has been tucked into the flour jar lid: IF YOU FINISH THE BREAD, START ANOTHER. NO ONE LIKES THE LAST SLICE AS MUCH AS THEY CLAIM.
