The beach curves left beneath the cavern wall into a grove of enormous pale fungi. Some rise taller than houses on thick ribbed stalks, their caps translucent at the edges and faintly blue from within. Smaller growths cluster around their bases in shelves, cups, and branching forms that resemble coral. The ground changes from black sand to springy dark soil veined with white threads. Each footstep releases a soft earthy smell. When air moves through the grove, fine luminous spores drift from the largest caps and settle slowly like greenish snow. The grove thickens around a low ridge of stone and becomes difficult to cross beyond it. Red and amber fungi can be seen farther along the wall through narrow gaps, while several fallen caps to the right form broad natural platforms overlooking the underground sea; neither is an established onward route. Near the ridge, a cluster of small bell-shaped fungi gives off distinct musical tones when drops of condensation strike them. The notes are irregular but not random enough to ignore comfortably. A line of tiny footprints crosses the soil beneath them and disappears under one of the largest stalks.
